South Carolina State Museum

Housed in the historic 1893 Columbia Mill textile building, our "biggest artifact," the South Carolina State Museum tells the history of South Carolina through our many traveling museum exhibits, permanent collections, and educational programs Come and enjoy South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science and technology. Many of the museum’s displays are interconnected. You will find there is history in our art, artistic beauty in our natural history and science, and history behind our technology. All disciplines are also represented by objects in the hands-on Stringer Discovery Center. Although no museum can display its entire collection, we offer a varied sampling of the wonders found both within our state and around the world.
There is always something to see and do at the South Carolina State Museum!

Guests are invited to see four floors of fascinating exhibits on South Carolina history, art, natural history and science and technology. Explore the universe in our state-of-the-art Observatory and 55ft digital dome Plantarium, where you can journey to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, revel in spectacular laser shows and more. Plus, take your movie-going experience to new levels in our 4D Theater where you can enjoy 3D movies enhanced with physical features, including water sprayers, leg ticklers, air blasters, vibrating seats and other surprises.
