Located at: Old Mill Pond Trail – 711 East Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072
Originally built in the 1890s, Lexington’s Old Mill, once called the Lexington Manufacturing Company, was constructed using granite quarried from nearby and situated along Twelvemile Creek. The creek’s water powered over 200 looms and 7,000 spindles, producing cotton goods, including cloth and mattress covers, which were exported nationwide. The mill operated non-stop until it changed ownership in the 1920s, continuing cotton production for nearly 40 more years.
By the early 1960s, cotton manufacturing came to an end, and the building later served as a warehouse and boat production facility. In 1984, it was transformed into a mixed-use development, which is similar to its current use.
As part of the Town’s 2012 Vision Plan, a walking trail was proposed around the mill pond. However, the historic flooding of 2015 altered those plans when it breached the Old Mill’s earthen dam, leaving the area vacant for nearly a decade.
Despite the setback, the flood provided an opportunity to rethink the space. Through a public-private partnership, the Town of Lexington completed and opened the Old Mill Pond Trail to the public in 2024.
