In its early days, Prosperity, SC was known as Frog Level and it was originally chartered under that name in 1851. Southern Railroad established a depot there in the 1870s and citizens wanted a name that better reflected the character of their town. In 1873 the name was changed to Prosperity which mirrored the name of the prominent Presbyterian Meeting House in town.

Today, the Town of Prosperity has a recorded population of 1,049 and combines old fashioned charm with all the necessary conveniences. The Town Square with its antique clock and gazebo faces a home town Drug Store that was established in 1895, several restaurants and antique stores, a hardware store, florist, dry cleaners, laundromat, beauty shops, and just up the Street is a new Piggly Wiggly grocery store.In 1996, a modern elementary school was constructed. Prosperity?s desirable location adjacent to Newberry with easy access to Lake Murray make it a rapidly growing community with small town attitude.

Prosperity is home to Gasthaus Zur Elli, ranked the number 1 best German restaurant in South Carolina and ranked number 5 in the nation.
