smallSUGAR is an all-day café from chefs Aaron Hoskins and Sarah Simmons located in the City Market Development in the Vista in Columbia, SC. The husband and wife team, along with Chef/Partner Elie Yigo, features “Carolina Cuisine”- approachable dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients primarily sourced from smaller farms throughout the Carolinas. We call it “food you want to eat every day.”
In lieu of accepting gratuity we choose to pay our staff a living wage.
smallSUGAR features counter service for take-away beverages, pastries, and lunch and light table-service for guests dining in.
The pastry menu features a selection of breads, croissants, cookies, danishes, macarons, and rotating seasonal pastries. Everything is made from scratch using whole grain flours freshly grown and milled by local sources, including Anson Mills (Columbia, SC) and Carolina Ground (Asheville, NC).
The hyper-seasonal all-day menu was developed around the produce grown by small, independent farmers throughout the Midlands and will offer a selection of sandwiches, salads and vegetables. A variety of breakfast dishes are also available all day.
Additionally, smallSUGAR will serve as the location for the second phase of the pilot the CITY GRIT Hospitality Workforce Development program. The goal of the program is to provide opportunity and culinary training to non-college bound youth.
We strive to offer improved conditions for employees:
- Guarantee a livable wage for all staff once they’ve completed the initial on-boarding phase of employment.
- Offer a transportation stipend for employees to offset parking and/or transportation costs associated with concepts located in downtown Columbia.
- Incentives for community engagement by volunteering with one of our partners at Richland Library, FoodShare, Transitions, Oliver Gospel Mission, End Childhood Hunger South Carolina, Harvest Hope, or Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters.
- Continued and expansive training in hospitality, marketing, money and asset management, the culinary arts, and management.
