The Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce is set to host its 2nd annual Blythewood Doko Christkindl Market on December 9-10, 2023, at the Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union Amphitheater in Doko Meadows Park in Blythewood. Widely recognized as a Christmas Market, the English translation of the term “Christkindl” is Christ child. Although some trace its origin as far back as 1298 AD, most attribute the traditional Christkindl Market to the city of Dresden (now in Germany) in 1434.
The event is designed in the style of traditional Christmas markets found in over 40 German cities and villages (20 plus in England) and numerous other countries (more than 30 in the US). It will feature arts and craft vendors, as well as specialty foods of the season. The festivities will take place on Saturday, December 9, and Sunday, December 10, concluding with the annual Blythewood Christmas Parade on Sunday afternoon, December 10.
Local schools, organizations, and churches are invited to participate by showcasing versions of their holiday season productions, contributing to the vibrant sounds and traditions of the season. Scheduled drama and musical presentations will be featured throughout the weekend, providing an additional performance opportunity for these groups.
As of the end of November 2023, local Holiday Markets are slated to be completed. Plans include the creation of a “Christmas Village” and collaboration with the Blythewood Farmers Market, as well as other local artists, craftspeople, and food and beverage vendors. This collaboration aims to offer an additional opportunity to explore and purchase unique handmade and crafted gifts, seasonal foods, and beverages.
