Description
Recently named a Southern Cultural Treasure by SouthArts and the Ford Foundation, Collage Dance Collective is one of the fastest-growing dance companies in the United States. Known for its innovative yet deeply rooted approach to ballet, the company presents a dynamic repertoire that includes works like Joshua Manculich’s Come Rain or Shine, a hopeful and interconnected pas de quatre, and Hope Boykin’s introspective piece I Am My Work. The collective also performs Durante Verzola’s neo-classical ballet Luminescent, set to the music of pioneering Black composer Joseph Bologne, and Amy Hall Garner’s Bluff City Blues, a jubilant homage to Memphis’ rich Blues legacy. Collage’s mix of tradition and innovation has earned it widespread acclaim and a rapidly growing fanbase across the country.
Founded in 2006 in response to the lack of racial diversity in ballet, Collage Dance has become a vital force in expanding access to classical dance, particularly in underserved communities. Its dance conservatory, launched in 2009, has trained thousands of students, helping cultivate a vibrant Black dance community in Memphis and beyond. Through emotionally charged performances and a commitment to diversity advocacy, Collage remains at the forefront of ballet’s evolution, making it one of the top 50 ballet companies in the U.S.
