The exhibition Reverent Ornament: Art from the Islamic World coincides with Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a monthlong holiday for Muslims focused on the principles of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. This offers a perfect opportunity to learn more about, refresh memories of, or simply celebrate this most auspicious Muslim holiday. Begin in the CMA Theater as panelists Imam Omar Shaheed of Masjid (Mosque) As-Salaam, Islamic school educator Afroz Habib, and Dr. Akif Aydin of Atlantic Institute SC engage in dialogue with CMA Curator of Education Glenna Barlow about the significance of the holy month for Muslims across the world and the principles that it embodies.

Following the conversation, head to the Reception Gallery for iftar, the evening meal during Ramadan that breaks the day’s fast and is a time for gathering with friends and family. Before breaking fast, a community member leads attendees in stuffing dates, after which a moment for prayer is given to anyone who would like to do so. After sunset, a halal meal is served buffet style by Sahara Restaurant.

Reverent Ornament galleries open 6:00 p.m. | Panel 6:30 p.m. | Date stuffing and dinner to follow | Dinner served after sunset

Galleries and talk: free. Dinner: $18 / $15 for students / $5 for children under 6.
