Step back in time with the legendary Drifters as they bring their timeless hits to the Newberry Opera House! From “Under the Boardwalk” to “Stand by Me,” this Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group, under the guidance of their original management, continues to captivate audiences with classics that defined an era.

Description

The Drifters, one of rock and roll’s most iconic vocal groups, are back on tour in the United States, bringing their timeless hits to life under the direction of their original management team, the Treadwell family. With songs like “Up on the Roof,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “This Magic Moment,” and “There Goes My Baby,” The Drifters have earned a revered place in music history. Founded in the early 1950s and boasting legendary lead singers such as Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King, the group became pioneers in blending R&B with lush orchestration, making “There Goes My Baby” the first R&B song to feature string instruments. Their influence on the genre is indisputable, and their contributions led to their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside legends like the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Managed by the late George Treadwell, who also discovered artists like Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn, The Drifters achieved more than 20 million-selling singles, and their song “Under the Boardwalk” remains the most-played R&B record of all time. With songs written by music legends such as Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller and Carole King, they’ve graced stages worldwide, from the White House to the Berlin Wall on the night it fell. Now, this monumental reunion tour celebrates The Drifters’ extraordinary 50-year legacy, inviting audiences to relive the magic of their groundbreaking sound and unforgettable performances.
