The Spark that Ignited a Revolution
On April 19, 1775, colonial militia stood their ground against British forces in Massachusetts, igniting the American Revolution. This pivotal moment became known as the “Shot Heard Round the World,” a phrase immortalized by Ralph Waldo Emerson. To honor this legacy, Lexington County was officially named in 1785, replacing the name Saxe Gotha, and forever linking South Carolina to this pivotal historical event. Lexington would have its share of Revolutionary War action, including the Battle of Tarrar Springs, fought just one mile east of Lexington on November 16, 1781.
Now, 250 years later, we invite you to join us for a FREE fun, family-friendly celebration. This event will honor a key moment in American history. You will learn about the battle that changed history and gave Lexington its name.
