Reading Time: 4 minutes

This region offers so much outdoor fun from Lake Murray to Congaree National Park… but for a short part of the year it is cold and sometimes rainy preventing outdoor fun. We’ve got the solution…we’ve compiled seven unique and incredible indoor attractions that you’ll want to check out.

The Grand on Main

The Grand on Main, located at 1619-1625 Main Street in Columbia, offers an upscale casual dining experience, seven boutique bowling lanes, comfortable lounge areas, TV’s and board games. It’s a great spot for families…the adults can enjoy the restaurant and bar area and the kids have a destination for fun! The adults may even want to check out the new Robinson Room; it’s located in the hidden lower level of the Grand on Main and is the latest swanky desert and cocktail lounge. For more information on The Grand, visit www.thegrandonmain.com.

Stars and Strikes

Stars and Strikes is a family entertainment center with bowling, arcade games, laser tag, bumper cars, and escape rooms. The Irmo, SC, facility is located at 800 Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo. The kids love this spot because the fun never stops! The adults love it too because in the center of it all is a beautiful cocktail bar with endless drinks and food. Visit www.starsandstrikes.com for more information.

Altitude Trampoline Park

The Altitude Trampoline Park, located at 7451 Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, is an attraction for any age….there’s 50,000 square feet of trampoline and amusement fun. For more information on this fun facility, visit www.altitudetrampolinepark.com.

SC Riot Room

Have you heard about the Riot Room? It’s a room where anger ends. Come smash and destroy objects for fun at the SC Riot Room, located at 2243 Lee Park Road in West Columbia. Four people are allowed per riot room. There are all types of items available to destroy such as glassware, ceramics, and electronics. You can even bring your own things to smash. Of course, this is exclusive for ages 14 years and older. Turn up the music in your Riot Room and let out your frustrations! For more information, visit www.scriotroom.com.

The Transmission Arcade

The Transmission Arcade, often referred to as the “barcade” is located at 1712 Main Street in Columbia. It began as an attempt to create a really cool restaurant featuring vintage video games and pinball machines. Some of the machines date back to the 1970’s. The arcade houses eight pinball machines which are a top draw for all ages. You can play video games at home but there’s nothing else like the pinball machines. Transmission has an extensive selection of craft beer and everything on their menu is made from scratch. They are open Wednesday through Sunday. For more details, visit www.transmissionarcade.com.

Craft Axe Throwing

Have you ever tried axe throwing? Our region is home to two axe throwing facilities, one in downtown Columbia and one in Lexington. Axe throwing is for ages 10 and older. Axe throwing can be casual fun and competitive. Four people are allowed per lane and you basically score points by throwing axes at a giant dartboard like target. The closer you get to the bull’s-eye the more points you earn. The lanes are staffed with trained instructors helping folks nail the bull’s-eye. Best of all, axe throwing does not require any experience. Find out more at www.craftaxethrowing.com

Carter and Holmes Orchid Nursery

Another unique attraction is touring one of the 18 greenhouses at Carter and Holmes Orchid Nursery in Newberry. The nursery, located at 629 State Road in Newberry, is filled with extraordinary orchids.  Beyond beauty, some of the orchids even smell amazing like chocolate, vanilla, coconut and even Dr. Pepper. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility year-round and wander through the greenhouses. There’s even a greenhouse full of orchids that are for sale.
