The nationally acclaimed Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden features 2,000 animal species in natural habitat settings and includes a 70-acre Botanical Garden, showcasing magnificent form gardens. Columbia’s State House offers daily tours or set pace on a historic walking tour along Main Street. Arts and performance venues, outdoor recreation opportunities and historical treasures are plentiful, while natural phenomenon’s like the Purple Martins of Lake Murray or the fireflies at Congaree National Park are a rare wonders worth witnessing.
Day 1
Top State Attractions - Day #1
Spend the whole day exploring the 170 acres of the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens. With two distinct parks along the scenic Lower Saluda River, this nationally acclaimed zoo is home to over 2000 animals, featuring animals from all over the world along with an Aquarium Reptile Complex, Birdhouse, Conservation Outpost and the Riverbanks farm. Cross over the river to experience the amazing gardens that showcase indigenous and exotic plant species in stunning landscaped settings.
Day 2
Top State Attractions - Day #2
Head down the road to explore the historic city of Newberry. Plan accordingly to experience the astonishing variety of orchids at Carter and Holmes Orchid Nursery, the largest Orchid grower east of the Mississippi, shop the boutiques that line the downtown square, grab lunch at any one of the local restaurants and then finally take a tour of the historic Newberry Opera House. With over 250 performances a year, you may even take in a show. Or, head over to the Enoree River Winery to enjoy a stroll in the vineyard and a taste one of their award-winning wines.
