It has taken countless years and significant effort by community stakeholders to bring the Lake Murray Destination Landmark to life. “For many years, Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism Board has worked on an iconic way to welcome the 1.5 million+ visitors to this region each year. Many are agreeing with us, this new Destination Landmark will provide such a welcome” said Miriam Atria, President/CEO Capital City/Lake Murray Country (CCLMC)!

At the ribbon cutting held Thursday, November 3, 2022 CCLMC Board Member, Susan O’Cain welcomed media and South Carolina State dignitaries. In her speech on behalf of CCLMC, she thanked Iris Griffin with Dominion Energy for initially supporting the project along with Bill Dukes and SCDOT. Jane Plante and Reed Rogers with AOS Specialty Contractors for their donation of the site prep and completion of the patio of engraved pavers. Rudy Waller with Magna Sign International in Lexington for his tireless dedication in getting the actual sign construction to perfection. Everette Cashion for all the electrical work and Stewart Mungo for getting the area hydro seeded. Jimmy Chao, CCLMC Board Chair and President & Chief Engineer of Chao and Associates for all the site surveys and professional support. And most importantly this project would not have been possible without the support of the community and the families who purchased bricks, who laid the foundation of the project. “Your tremendous support of this project helped push it into fruition and the money raised will go towards continued maintenance of the landmark,” said O’Cain.

Representatives Chip Huggins, Chris Wooten, Nathan Ballentine, and Paula Rawl Calhoon presented a certificate of recognition to CCLMC on behalf of the South Carolina House of Representatives. “We know this beautiful and iconic landmark will bring tremendous joy and pride to the Lake Murray community for years to come,” said Rep. Huggins

In the Spring of 2022, CCLMC launched the Destination Landmark brick campaign, over 350 families purchased engraved pavers. CCLMC currently has a waiting list for phase 2 of engraved brick sales and there is plenty of room at the Landmark site for hundreds more. The future date of phase 2 will be announced on LakeMurrayCountry.com and CCLMC’s social media channels.

“The Destination Landmark has been embraced and supported by the community,” said President/CEO Atria. “This region now has an official welcome to Lake Murray – The Jewel of SC and CCLMC is so thankful for our partners in this project.”
