DAY 1

Morning:

Begin your day in Newberry, SC , named among the Top 100 Best Small Towns in America. Enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the Historic Newberry Opera House. Built in 1881 The Newberry Opera House has served as the City Centerpiece for 118 years. Silent "moving pictures" were shown at the Opera House in the early 1900’s. A "Thomas Edison Talkie" was presented in the late teens. It used a phonograph record for sound. Slowly, movies replaced the big stage shows, and in the 1920’s the Opera House was remodeled as a movie theater. In more recent years, the structure underwent a $5.5 million Renovation which restored it to its' Historic Splendor and converted it to a State of the Art Performance facility.

Afternoon:

Grab a delightful bite of lunch at one of Newberry’s downtown restaurants and pop over to The Old Fire House to learn the remarkable story about “Old Joe”, The Famous Fire Horse. Old Joe faithfully served the Newberry Fire Department from 1904 to 1930. Upon his death, the fire house alarm tolled 35 times, one for each year their famous & beloved horse served his duty to the citizens of Newberry. Next, take a short bus ride over to tour the nation’s largest exporter of beautiful orchids at Carter and Holmes Orchids. Guided tours are welcomed of their greenhouses and explain how to grow, care for and enjoy orchids year round. Purchases may be made to ship home.

Evening:

Enjoy the Cabana which offers a great dinner menu and make sure to save room for the oversized dessert selections. Don’t forget to check out Storm Cellar Wine & Cigar Bar. Great to unwind after a fun filled day. Next, sit back, relax and catch a show at the Newberry Opera House.

DAY 2:

Morning:

Wake up and enjoy breakfast, before stopping by the Lake Murray Visitors Center which is located only a few feet from the historic Lake Murray Dam. The Lorick Plantation which houses the Lake Murray Visitors Center is a great place to find brochures of fun things to do in the region. Tour this historic home and its museum to find out more about the construction of the man made earthen dam, the history of the lake, artifacts from Native Americans and the World War II Doolittle Raiders practice area.

Afternoon:

Take in a great view by having a picnic lunch at one of the SCE&G Lake Murray Park sites, where you can sit at picnic pavilions or put your toes in the sand on either side of the 2 mile dam, and then take a walk along the Lake Murray Dam walkway to see the views up close.

Afternoon:

Select to dine at Liberty on the Lake and enjoy one of the lakes most sought after dining views around the region. After lunch, hike the nature trails at Dreher Island State Park or rent a bicycle at Saluda Shoals Park to enjoy the beautiful weather in Lake Murray Country.

Evening:

Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise aboard The Spirit of Lake Murray year round. During the months of June-August experience a spectacular nature phenomenon at its best called the Purple Martin Phenomenon. The Purple Martins have found a sanctuary on an island in the middle of Lake Murray called Bomb Island. These birds fly in by the hundreds of thousands each morning and night at sunset to roost on Bomb Island. The show you will see is an unbelievable sight to behold and one you must experience while visiting Lake Murray Country.
